Their descendants referred as Pauravas now ruled most of the Northern parts of the Indian subcontinent. The Indian subcontinent at that time was known as Bharata, named after the legendary emperor Bharata, the great great ancestor of the Kuru dynasty who ruled most of these parts. The land of Bharata covered the existing countries of Afghanistan (ancient name Gandhar), Pakistan (that covered much of the Indus Valley civilization with prime cities of Moenjo and Hariappa), India, Bangladesh, South East Asia and Lanka. The kings and rulers in this post Mahabharata era were recovering from a dark age. Meanwhile, Kali yuga had already set in. The other major rulers across the land of Bharata were Magadha, Vidharbha, The Cholas in the South, and Lanka. During the rule of King Nichakra who was one of the kings of the Paurava dynasty, a great flood in the Northern area had forced him to move the capital of the Paurava kingdom to Kausambi, the holy city of Prayag. As centuries passed, most of the kingdoms in Bharata had developed petty differences. Later, King Nripanjaya ruled the Purava kingdom This was the time when the Gandharvas from the land of Gandhar launched a mammoth attack on the land of Bharata.

Brilliant must Read ! Beautiful written
Combining Science Fiction and mythology, the author has weaved a beautiful story that is beautifully written too. Couldn’t put the book down till finishing it. It contains few sketches too.
Don’t think twice, just pick it up.
Brilliantly written. A must read.
I enjoyed reading this collection of short stories and each one was simply brilliant.
The first story titled “the last war” was in the theme of Hindu mythology and warfare. This was new for me and I thought it was mind blowing.
The rest of the stories were mostly in the genre of ‘hard science fiction’ and were about aliens and intergalactic space travel. I loved these even more especially the one titled “Blink”.
All of the stories were filled with adventure and the narrative was impeccable.

A very unique read
The story goes as a sequel to the epic tale of Mahabharata. Another war following the last war and what could be the forces applied?
How did the kingdoms come and whose successors stayed as allies and whose didn’t! The detailed explanation along with the reference to the historical positions makes it even more interesting to read. A very different concept and the narration is simple and very detailed.

Fascinating and interesting fiction
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book – ‘The last war’ by Sambit Daspatnaik. A combination of a novel and a collection of short stories is a pleasant surprise. More than anything, I enjoyed the author’s passion about ‘Bharath’ and it’s culture / treasure. Specifically, I like ‘The holy temple of Eula’. It shows the high spiritual thinking the author has.
Best wishes for Sambit Daspatnaik to write more and more 🙂
